Examining body: Edexcel

Course content

Students will study six main units:

  • Core Mathematics 1, 2, 3 and 4
    Algebra and functions; co-ordinate geometry in the (x, y) plane; sequences and series; differentiation; Integration; trigonometry; exponentials and logarithms.
  • Statistics 1
    Mathematical models in probability and statistics; representation and summary of data; probability; correlation and regression; discrete random variables; discrete distributions; the Normal distribution.
  • Decision 1
    Algorithms; algorithms on graphs; the route inspection problem; critical path analysis; linear programming; matchings.

Entry requirements

Five GCSE passes at grade C or higher, including Mathematics at grade B or above. Students will be expected to have followed the higher level mathematics course.

Progression routes

A qualification in Mathematics proves your ability to think logically, understand complex ideas and apply them to the real world and employers actively seek out such people. There is no doubt that Mathematics is highly regarded by universities and not just for those wishing to continue the subject at degree level:

Mathematics opens the door to more career  opportunities than any other subject e.g. Engineering, Systems Analyst, Medicine, Accounting, Teaching, Statistician, Surveying.
